The direct sales, multi level marketing industry has recently acquired a poor reputation in some circles. Whether deserved or not there has been a large number of scam companies shut down by regulators so how to you tell the good from the bad? Read on and Ill show you how to tell the real from the fake and how to set up your home business the right way. Some of the scammers have gotten quite sophisticated in their business models making it harder to know whats real and whats not. A bit of solid research however can make all the difference. Pyramid or Ponzi schemes are the fakes. They require you, the business owner, to recruit more salespeople or purchase product up front. In addition, the fakes often require a sign-up fee. If you are required to sign up new members, pay for your own training and marketing materials or invest a lot of money initially you are most likely dealing with an illegitimate marketing scheme. The well run, legitimate direct sales companies allow you to earn most of your money on the sales of its product or services rather than focusing on membership sales. While there are some other tests you can conduct to prove the legitimacy of your MLM opportunity one of the smartest things you can do to protect yourself is to search the internet. Google the name of the MLM and add the word scam to it. If people have been burned in the past, it will definitely be listed on some scam forum. The very best thing you can do to protect yourself against fraud is to make sure you educate yourself as much as possible before entering into any financial arrangement with anyone. Starting a home business isnt the most difficult thing but its not as easy as some websites will have you believe. You can join a direct sales MLM business as most people entering this field do. If youre successful, this leads to monthly residual income which is wonderful. Your other choice is to start a business selling either your own products or affiliate products. This can be a little easier to get going but usually does not include any monthly residual income. If you were to join one of the established MLM companies the benefits are instant creditability and support including training. The obvious downside being you will one of potentially thousands of distributors for your company and will have to compete for a share of the sales accordingly. Most MLMs require a period of consistent growth before the big money kicks in. As mentioned, an alternative for the brave at heart is to start your own direct sales company where you do all the work but also keep most of the profits. While you can do very well, as previously mentioned, you are 100% responsible for your own income and theres always the possibility of products getting returned after the sales that also comes out of your profits. Either way, starting an online business is a fair amount of work but the rewards for doing it correctly are worth all the hassles.

I think anyone looking to get into an MLM has many obstacles before they even start, that being perception.

There is a huge perception that all MLM's are scams, and many of them are.

Even if a person was to find a legitimate MLM, when they try to recruit others into their downline, they have to be a good enough sales person to overcome other people's perceptions on MLM's, and quite simply most people don't have those skills.
